About Us

My name is Russell Dutnell.  I established Riverman Engineering, P.L.C. as a sole proprietorship  in March, 2000 to provide consulting services for education, stream assessment, streambank stabilization, river restoration and fisheries habitat improvement.

I am a professional engineer currently licensed to practice in Oklahoma, Texas and Maryland.  I have over 10 years of experience studying the morphology of creeks, streams, and rivers.

I received an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in May, 2000.  My thesis “Development of Bankfull Discharge and Channel Geometry relationships for Natural Channel Design in Oklahoma Using a Fluvial Geomorphic Approach,” used survey data from 49 streams with U.S.G.S gauge stations to develop “regional curves” for Oklahoma that relate the bankfull geometry of channels to drainage area.

I have studied under Dave Rosgen, Richard Hey, Robert Newbury, Ann Riley, Dave Derrick and Craig Fischenich and continue to learn more about streams and rivers every day.

I have taught classes on fluvial geomorphology in Texas and Oklahoma, including a graduate level course in the Civil Engineering and Environmental Science Department at the University of Oklahoma.

I have designed and implemented numerous streambank stabilization and river restoration projects in Oklahoma, Texas, Maryland and Washington and have conducted stream habitat surveys in Oklahoma, Colorado and Washington.

In 1998, I received a “Regional Administrator’s Environmental Excellence Award” for “Excellence in Wetlands Protection” from U.S. EPA Region 6.

Most importantly, I love creeks and rivers and the unique  challenges they pose to those who wish to work with them.

“The song of the river ends not at her banks but in the hearts of those who have loved her.”
